Mayor Karachi Inaugurates Book Fair Titled “Kitabon Ka Jahan” At Empress Market

KARACHI, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 5th Sep, 2026) Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, has stated that encroachments have been removed from the historic Empress Market, restoring this heritage site. The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is dedicated to both urban development and preserving the city's historical buildings and culture. A decision has been made to transform Empress Market into a cultural hub and public space.

Citizens of Karachi are encouraged to visit, browse, and support local publishers by purchasing books from this venue, while various events will continue to promote cultural appreciation. This was expressed by Mayor Wahab during the inauguration ceremony for the book fair titled “Kitabon Ka Jahan” at Empress Market on Saturday. Parliamentary Leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party in the City Council, Karamullah Waqasi, along with other city council members, elected representatives, and relevant officials, attended the event.

Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab toured various book stalls, selecting books himself.

Addressing the ceremony, Mayor Wahab emphasized the importance of books as a source of knowledge, awareness, and positive thinking. He noted that fostering a love for reading among the people of Karachi is a pressing need. Organizing this book fair at Empress Market, particularly for young individuals, is a commendable initiative. Books play a pivotal role in introducing younger generations to knowledge and broadening their horizons.

He added that ensuring the younger generation develops a reading habit is a shared responsibility. Reading books promotes positive thinking and tolerance within society, while cultivating a habit of reading from an early age paves the way for an educated, informed, and capable society.

Speaking to media representatives, Mayor Wahab highlighted how people often neglect proper utilization of constructed buildings, allowing land-grabbing elements to exploit the situation. As such, Empress Market will not only be recognized as a historical landmark but also as a cultural center and public space. He promised that more events would be organized to continue promoting culture, including a Qawwali program at Burns Garden the following day, which would be open to the public without charge.
