Missing German WW2 U-boat discovered off Devon 82 years on
BBC News reports on the discovery of a German submarine, U-672, that went missing during World War Two. The vessel was located 20 miles (32km) off Salcombe, Devon, by a dive team from Gasperados at a depth of 230ft (70m).
The U-672 was attacked by HMS Balfour in July 1944 and subsequently scuttled by its 52-strong crew, all of whom survived. A navy log with incorrect coordinates led to the sub's elusion until now.
Dominic Robinson, a Gasperados diver, said he was pleased to help identify the vessel after recognizing its distinctive features. The boat's position matched the historical record, despite initial confusion due to a clerical error in the documents.
After the attack, the U-boat's commander waited until the last possible moment before blowing the tanks, allowing the crew to reach the surface and be rescued. Robinson spoke to the family of the skipper, who said he lived a long and happy life.
This discovery is a testament to the enduring impact of World War Two and the dedication of those who continue to explore its historical remnants.
