Mohamed Bin Zayed Water Initiative Launches ‘Water Pioneers’ Youth Programme to Support Generation of Emirati Talent in Addressing Global Water Challenges

The Mohamed Bin Zayed Water Initiative today announced the launch of "Water Pioneers", a national programme aiming to equip a generation of young Emiratis with the knowledge, skills, and leadership capabilities needed to tackle water scarcity. This initiative builds a network of talent, fostering contributions to national and global sustainable solutions.

The programme, launched as part of the Initiative's human capital investment strategy, offers an integrated platform for learning, capacity building, knowledge exchange, and active participation in local and international water dialogues.

Applications are open for the Programme’s first cohort, seeking 15 young Emirati participants aged 18 to 35 from diverse academic backgrounds and professional sectors. This diversity ensures a range of perspectives and experiences to support innovation, strengthen multidisciplinary collaboration, and drive sustainable solutions to water scarcity challenges.

Global water security is facing mounting pressures with rising demand and the impacts of climate change. Projected demand for sustainable water supplies could exceed available resources by up to 40% by 2030. Currently, 2.2 billion people lack access to safely managed drinking water, 3.5 billion lack safe sanitation, and approximately 4 billion experience severe water scarcity for at least one month annually.

“Launching the ‘Water Pioneers’ youth programme reflects a long-term commitment to building a generation of Emiratis who possess the knowledge, vision, and ability to help shape a more sustainable water future,” stated Ayesha Al Ateeqi, Chief Executive Officer of the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative.

She further added, "Water scarcity is not just an environmental challenge; it’s a strategic issue impacting communities' stability and development opportunities. Young leaders, with their initiatives, creativity, and boldness, are driving force for transforming water awareness into tangible impact and innovative solutions. By empowering new Emirati youth voices and strengthening water knowledge, the Programme seeks to nurture talent capable of making a difference."
