Multan’s Ageing Sewerage Network Gets Rs 24bn Makeover, Full Revival Needs Rs 60bn

Multan’s sewerage infrastructure is undergoing a significant transformation with a Rs 24 billion rehabilitation project currently underway. However, this only addresses a fraction of the city's decades-old and badly deteriorated network, which requires an additional Rs 60 billion for a complete overhaul.

Commissioner Multan, Amir Karim Khan, revealed that the ongoing project is being executed swiftly, alongside several other development initiatives in the city. The funding will primarily focus on constructing and upgrading disposal stations, replacing only 12-15% of Multan's sewerage lines.

Khan emphasized that the rapid expansion of the city's population has significantly strained the existing system, causing it to deteriorate over time. He noted that while the current project is a priority intervention, it is not a complete solution.

Addressing concerns about slower progress in certain areas, Khan explained that work is happening simultaneously across the city, with varying paces depending on the severity of issues and technical requirements. He assured that no area has been left out, and teams are dedicated to expediting the process.

Project officials stated that the new disposal stations will help alleviate immediate drainage system pressures, but replacing major trunk sewers and secondary lines across the remaining 85% of the city will depend on future funding allocations.

Residents in areas like Nawabpur and Syed Wali Khoi have long complained about blocked and overflowing sewerage lines, especially during monsoon seasons when the aging infrastructure struggles to manage increased wastewater.
