Climate Change and Development

Musadik Malik, Pakistan's Climate Minister, has called for a shift towards climate-resilient development to protect vulnerable communities, addressing the 29th Sustainable Development Conference (SDC 2026) in Islamabad.

He emphasized the need to:

  • Address unequal borrowing costs and climate-related losses faced by developing nations.
  • Support research and young innovators through proposed initiatives.

Malik questioned the traditional development model, stating that:

  • Development should benefit the lives and future of ordinary people, not just measured in dollars.
  • Poor communities should not bear the brunt of climate change and economic inequalities.

He highlighted the decline in development financing, with resources dropping by 23% in a year, and the disparity in borrowing costs, where wealthy countries pay significantly lower interest rates than developing nations.

The minister also drew attention to the human cost of climate change, explaining how vulnerable communities are suffering and losing livelihoods due to climate-related events. He shared the story of Gulab Rohi, a brick-kiln worker from Jacobabad, exemplifying this struggle.
