Nepal Floods: Death Toll Reaches 1,287 as Losses Hit $2.56 Billion
Nepalese police reported on Friday that the death toll from floods, landslides, and mudslides that ravaged the country last week has risen to 1,287, with 5,083 people still missing. Authorities estimate the property damage at approximately 387.5 billion Nepalese rupees (US$2.56 billion). Around 7,500 homes were completely destroyed, and 20,000 more require reconstruction.
The disaster, which occurred on August 26, left villages in ruins, severely damaged roads and infrastructure, and displaced thousands of people.
