India’s capital, New Delhi, has banned construction activities for six weeks to tackle air pollution. The ban will be in force from 10 December to 20 January as part of the winter action plan.

The plan includes restrictions on vehicular movement aimed at encouraging residents to use public transport. Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa stated that early implementation of these stringent measures would prevent the city’s air from becoming dangerously polluted during winter.

Parking fees will also be doubled from 1 November to discourage the use of private vehicles. According to an Indian publication, air pollution in Delhi often reaches dangerous levels during winter due to cold air trapping polluted particles close to the ground. Research indicates that 3.8 million deaths in India between 2009 and 2019 were linked to air pollution.

Considered one of the world’s most polluted capitals, Delhi faces a combination of factors contributing to its air pollution, including:

  • Emissions from power plants
  • Heavy traffic
  • Construction activities
  • Crop-residue burning
