New System, Same Problems: Alonso Unhappy with ‘Soft’ Chelsea
BBC Sport – Chelsea have started the season strongly in terms of attack, scoring 10 goals in their first four Premier League games. However, they’ve also conceded two or more goals in each match, a trend that hasn’t been seen at Stamford Bridge for over a decade.
A Subdued Start Under Alonso
The appointment of new manager Xabi Alonso has not brought immediate defensive stability. The Blues have now gone 20 league matches without a clean sheet, their longest such run in 65 years.
Alonso admitted his side needs to be "competing better" and avoid being "soft" in duels after a 2-2 draw with Hull City on Saturday. He also highlighted individual errors, such as misjudged crosses and failed clearances, which led to Hull’s goals.
Defensive Concerns
Hull boss Sergej Jakirovic praised Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, calling him the "man of the match" after he denied several good opportunities from Oli McBurnie, Mohamed-Ali Cho, and Lucas Herrington.
Former defender Ashley Williams agreed that Chelsea‘s defensive issues are severe: "They are all over the place in transitions… Both individually and as a defensive unit, they are so far off it and are shipping goals."
Alonso’s Experimentation
Alonso has been trying different formations since taking charge, changing shape three times in a week alone. Despite early goals from Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro, along with contributions from Cole Palmer, Chelsea had to settle for a point against Hull.
"We got what we deserved," said Alonso. "We need to be more solid and controlled… In a few months I’m sure we’ll be able to control better."
