Nigeria's Ben Dancer Dances Non-Stop for Seven Days in World Record Bid

BBC News reports on a remarkable feat by Nigerian dancer, Benjamin Daniel, also known as "Ben Dancer," who successfully completed a 168-hour dance marathon in Lagos, aiming to break the Guinness World Records title for the longest individual dance marathon.

A Dance Marathon Like No Other

Daniel, at 33, danced non-stop for seven days, cheered on by friends and supporters at Lagos's Freedom Park. He reached his goal around 03:00 local time on Tuesday and continued dancing for an additional nine hours, according to his team. Subsequently, he was taken to the hospital for a medical check-up due to exhaustion.

Guinness World Records has confirmed receiving Daniel's application and is currently reviewing the evidence. The current record stands at 127 hours, held by Indian dancer Srushti Sudhir Jagtap since 2023.

A Celebration of Nigerian Dance Culture

Daniel's dance marathon was a testament to Nigeria's vibrant and diverse dance traditions. He drew from various styles, including Afrobeats, fuji, jazz, and zouk, and even incorporated traditional Nigerian outfits like the agbada and dashiki. The event was live-streamed on social media, attracting a bustling crowd of supporters.

A Personal Journey and Record Attempt

Preparing for this intense physical challenge, Daniel underwent rigorous fitness training, focusing on his diet and cardiovascular conditioning. During the danceathon, he followed a strict routine, taking five-minute breaks every hour, while consuming light meals and staying hydrated.

The dance marathon was more than just a physical endurance test; it celebrated Nigeria's cultural richness and the country's thriving internet culture. The event became a street party, with videos going viral and drawing more spectators to Freedom Park.

Supporting a Dance Legend

The outpouring of support for Daniel showcased the pride and excitement of his community. Moronumubo Akodu, a dedicated supporter, praised his determination but expressed concern for his well-being.

This remarkable attempt has indeed left its mark, symbolizing the indomitable spirit of Nigerian dance and the potential for breaking records on a global stage.
