Orangutans Released Back into Borneo Forest After Devastating Fires

BBC News reports on the release of eight orangutans into a Borneo forest reserve following devastating wildfires over the summer.

Three mothers and their three daughters, along with two adult males, were freed on Friday, according to International Animal Rescue Indonesia (Yiari) and the forestry ministry.

This release is a significant step forward in protecting these critically endangered species. The apes were rescued from wildfires that swept through their habitats in August and September, exacerbated by the El Niño ocean warming phenomenon.

Around 104,000 orangutans remain in Borneo and Sumatra, a stark decline from the over 230,000 a century ago, as per conservation group WWF.

The wildfires not only destroyed their natural habitats but also brought the orangutans closer to human settlements, endangering both the apes and the communities.

Among the released orangutans are:

  • Mama Nopi and her offspring Nopi, Naufal, and Nopan, who had been surviving in a coconut and rubber plantation.
  • Mama Lifa and her child Lifa, found in a patch of acacia trees surrounded by oil palm plantations.
  • Mama Man and her baby, Man, monitored since June and evacuated in early September due to nearby fires.

The chosen reserve offers the orangutans access to food and water, and is connected to other forested areas, ensuring their survival.

As noted by Yiari's Argitoe Ranting, "we want to ensure that rescued orangutans are not simply moved from one place to another, but actually have a chance to survive in their natural habitat."

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) recently warned that wildfires are burning in habitats containing 52% of Borneo's orangutan population.

The ongoing El Niño and land-clearing practices for plantations are contributing factors to the increased frequency and intensity of these wildfires, threatening the survival of these magnificent creatures.
