In a groundbreaking move for inclusive education, Pakistan has adopted a joint declaration to standardize Pakistan Sign Language (PSL) as a single national identity for the deaf community. This decision, reached after a national dialogue involving representatives from all federating units, establishes the National Institute of Special Education (NISE) as the core federal institute for PSL.

The declaration mandates the creation of a definitive 1,500-sign compendium, to be finalized by a national task force under a Deaf-led development principle. This ensures that the language is developed and owned by the deaf community itself. The initiative, in collaboration with UNICEF Pakistan, aims to remove regional disparities and provide uniform learning material for deaf children.

The Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training praised the collective effort, calling the declaration a robust roadmap for an inclusive future. This standardization is expected to ensure equal opportunities and inclusion for individuals with disabilities nationwide.
