Pakistan Reaffirms Commitment to Nuclear Safety & Security

Pakistan reaffirms its commitment to international standards of nuclear and radiation safety and nuclear security. This was stated by Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar, Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), during his delivery of Pakistan’s National Statement at the ongoing meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) board of Governors in Vienna.

Dr. Anwar emphasized that:

• Responsibility for nuclear safety and security within a state rests exclusively with that Member State.
• This fundamental principle should remain central to the IAEA’s activities in nuclear safety and security.
• Pakistan remains dedicated to upholding international standards of nuclear safety and security, integral components of its peaceful nuclear program.

He highlighted Pakistan’s record of five decades of safe operation of nuclear installations as proof of the robustness of its domestic regime for nuclear safety and security. Dr. Anwar also:

• Appreciated global progress in nuclear safety and security achieved with IAEA assistance.
• Noted advancements in adherence to and participation in the Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS).
• Emphasized Pakistan’s role in strengthening global nuclear safety, citing its presidency of the 10th Review Meeting of the Convention on Nuclear Safety held in April 2026.
• Expressed confidence that recommendations from this review meeting will enhance global nuclear safety.

Furthermore, Dr. Anwar underscored:

• Pakistan’s continued cooperation and partnership with IAEA in nuclear safety and security.
• Contributions by Pakistani experts to IAEA-coordinated emergency exercises and IPPAS missions.
• Support provided by the National Institute of Safety and Security (NISAS) as an IAEA Collaborating Centre for regional capacity building.
• The evolving role of the Pakistan Centre of Excellence for Nuclear Security (PCENS) as a regional hub for nuclear security capacity building among Member States, under a Practical Arrangement with IAEA.
