Shipments of beer and other alcoholic beverages have begun to reach the UK, Japan, Portugal and Thailand after government approval opened new export markets outside the OIC.

KARACHI, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 29th Sep, 2026) Pakistan’s renowned and historic beverage manufacturer, Murree Brewery, has resumed exporting alcoholic beverages abroad after nearly five decades.

According to foreign media reports, Murree Brewery has begun shipping beer and other alcoholic beverages to several countries, including the United Kingdom, Japan, Portugal and Thailand. The company’s Export Manager, Rameez Shah, stated that alcoholic beverages were exported to these nations during April.

In 2025, the Government of Pakistan allowed Murree Brewery to export alcoholic products to countries that are not members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The company had previously maintained export of other products like juice, mineral water and non-alcoholic malt beverages to international markets for several years.

Reports suggest that the sale of Murree Brewery’s alcoholic products abroad was halted after strict alcohol-related restrictions were introduced in Pakistan following 1977. Following the new permission, the company has started reintroducing its alcoholic products to the global market again after nearly 50 years.

Murree Brewery officials noted that, during an initial phase, the company is fortifying its overseas distributors and distribution network, subsequent to which export volumes will be gradually increased.

According to reports, the government changed the export policy at a time when Pakistan needs new sources of foreign exchange. The move has enabled Murree Brewery to access markets in non-OIC countries.

Murree Brewery is considered one of Pakistan’s oldest industrial companies. It was established during the British era in the 1860s, and its main production unit is located in Rawalpindi.
