Pakistan's Pink Salt Exports Reach $36 Million
Pakistan possesses substantial rock salt reserves, estimated at over 65 million metric tonnes, with PMDC-controlled reserves exceeding 36 million metric tonnes. This includes pink rock salt from the Salt Range region and grey salt from the Kohat Saline Series, both boasting purity levels up to 99%.
In Fiscal Year (FY) 2026, Pakistan's pink salt exports reached a significant $36 million, marking an increase from $35 million in FY25. The export volume also surged, reaching 148,071 tonnes compared to 127,924 tonnes the previous year.
The government has been actively involved in strengthening the product's geographical identity and international recognition. The "Khewra Pink Rock Salt" was registered as a Geographical Indication (GI) on July 18, 2022, and now has 17 authorized users. Efforts are underway to register the GI internationally for enhanced global recognition.
To streamline exports, the Ministry of Commerce collaborated with Pakistan Customs and the Federal Board of Revenue to introduce an exclusive Harmonized System (HS) code for pink salt (2501.0021). This change, adopted through the Finance Bill 2023-24, ensures proper export records. Additionally, a minimum export price of $130 per metric tonne has been implemented to prevent under-invoicing.
The Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) has promoted pink rock salt at major international events, including the Pakistan Pavilion at World Expo 2025 Osaka, centered around the theme "Universe in a Grain of Salt." The pavilion showcased various aspects of Pakistan's pink salt, its history, and cultural heritage.
Other promotional activities include participation in FoodAg Karachi and international exhibitions like Gulfood (UAE), Anuga (Germany), SIAL events (France, Canada, Malaysia), Foodex Japan, and MIHAS (Malaysia).
