PFUJ Reaffirms Commitment to Quaid-e-Azam’s Principles and Journalistic Values
Pakistan is facing serious challenges, including internal and external pressures, unrest, and terrorism, which increases the media's responsibility.
Statement by PFUJ President Rana Azeem and Secretary General Shakeel Ahmed
On the occasion of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah's death anniversary, the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) reiterates its commitment to adhering to the Quaid-e-Azam’s principles, teachings, and notably, his vision for journalism.
In a joint statement, Rana Azeem and Shakeel Ahmed emphasized that Jinnah described free, responsible, and principled journalism as essential for a democratic society. They vowed that the PFUJ will continue to safeguard these journalistic values.
They pointed out that Pakistan is facing significant challenges, from internal pressures to terrorism, and that the media's role becomes even more critical in such times.
The PFUJ leaders stressed their organization’s opposition to yellow journalism that could harm Pakistan's national unity, state institutions, or national security. They also clarified that while dissent, criticism, and accountability are fundamental journalistic rights, using journalism for personal interests, negative propaganda, or advancing foreign agendas goes against professional ethics.
"The PFUJ has always spoken up for genuine journalists and their community’s legitimate rights," they said, adding that they will continue to stand with journalists who view journalism as a responsible public service, not just a business.
They condemned elements within the media who prioritize personal or financial interests over ethical journalism and attempt to act as spokespeople for foreign agendas while residing in Pakistan. They clarified that these individuals are not affiliated with the PFUJ and will not be supported by the organization.
Azeem and Ahmed also reminded the government, specifically the Information Minister, Information Secretary, and Principal Information Officer, of the PFUJ's role as a genuine representative body for journalists. They highlighted the union's efforts to advocate for press freedom, journalists' rights, and responsible journalism both domestically and internationally. During Shakeel Ahmed's recent visit, detailed discussions were held with senior representatives of the International Federation of Journalists on these issues.
