PM Forms High-level Committee To Steer Pak-Iran Gas Pipeline Out Of Arbitration Impasse
ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 25th Aug, 2026) Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik on Tuesday informed the Senate that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has constituted a high-level committee to work out a mutually acceptable resolution of the Pak-Iran Gas Pipeline issue. The committee aims to balance Pakistan’s potential financial liability arising from arbitration with its future energy requirements.
Responding to a Calling Attention Notice raised by Talha Mahmood, the minister said the committee was examining the legal, financial, and energy dimensions of the stalled project, with a view to finding a solution in Pakistan’s national interest. He highlighted Iran's progress on their side, bringing gas from South Pars field to a city close to the Pakistan border.
The minister noted the matter had gone into arbitration in Paris, making it crucial for Pakistan to handle potential liability carefully. The government seeks a negotiated resolution with Iran to avoid further litigation complications.
Ali Pervaiz Malik added that the high-level committee is assessing Pakistan’s potential liability, the implications of litigation, and future energy needs to determine the project's way forward. He also addressed gas concerns in Balochistan by mentioning another high-level committee, headed by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, examining technical and payment matters related to the region.
