PM Shehbaz Announces Tamgha-e-Khidmat and Cash Reward for Nurse Who Saved Newborn During PIMS Fire

ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 3rd Sep, 2026) Prime Minister, Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday met nurse Razia Noreen, who saved a newborn's life during a fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), and praised her bravery and sense of duty.

The prime minister stated that the nation recognizes the courage and bravery demonstrated by Razia Noreen, making her a source of national pride. He highlighted that she executed her duties with immense courage and daring, irrespective of her personal safety.

He expressed that the mother of the child she saved will remember her in prayers for life.

Shehbaz Sharif announced that Razia Noreen would be honored with the Tamgha-e-Khidmat on March 23rd in recognition of her services. Additionally, he granted a cash reward of Rs one crore to her. He emphasized that while the monetary reward is significant, the true acknowledgment lies in the honor itself.

The prime minister assured strict action against all those responsible for the incident and directed the concerned Federal Minister to thoroughly review the hospital and ensure it undergoes necessary restructuring.

Razia Noreen, responding to the prime minister, stated that she was fulfilling her duty as people had entrusted their children to her at that moment, and this responsibility weighed heavily on her shoulders. She was grateful for the recognition and considered herself a role model for all nurses, acknowledging her colleagues' dedication and hard work.

She recounted the heartrending incident, saying she tried to rescue as many children as possible but could save only one due to the emergency situation. Noreen rushed inside the burning building without hesitation and instructed another nurse to help save postnatal mothers, some of whom had undergone operations.

She saved a tiny baby, the child of Asifa, weighing 1050 grams, and brought him outside. Concerned about the potential loss of children in the chaos, she entrusted the baby to someone she knew and trusted, identifying Dr Abdul Rehman. She then returned inside to rescue another child when a blast occurred, followed by darkness and smoke engulfing the area.

Federal Ministers Syed Mustafa Kamal and Attaullah Tarar were present at the event.
