PM Shehbaz Hands Over Rs 10 Mln Cheque to Nurse Who Saved Newborn During PIMS Fire
ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 3rd Sep, 2026) Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday met nurse Razia Noreen, who saved a newborn's life during a fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), and handed over a Rs 10 million cheque in recognition of her extraordinary bravery and sense of duty.
The prime minister stated that the nation acknowledged the courage and bravery shown by Razia Noreen, describing her as a source of pride for the country. He emphasized that she performed her duty with great courage and daring, disregarding her own safety.
He noted that the mother of the child she saved would remember her in prayers for life. The prime minister announced that Razia Noreen would be decorated with a national award on March 23 in recognition of her services. He clarified that while monetary compensation had its value, the true honor was the acknowledgment of her achievements.
Shehbaz Sharif also pledged strict action against all responsible for the PIMS fire incident and assured that the government would make every effort to ensure proper restructuring of the hospital. He requested the concerned Federal Minister to thoroughly review the hospital's operations.
In her remarks, Razia Noreen expressed gratitude for the recognition and considered herself a role model for all nurses. She described the incident as heartrending and shared that she had tried to save as many children as possible but could only rescue one due to the emergency situation.
Noreen recounted her actions during the fire: she immediately entered the affected area, instructed another nurse to save postnatal mothers, some of whom were undergoing operations, and then rescued Asifa's newborn baby weighing 1,050 grams. Fearing a child might get lost in the chaos, she entrusted the infant to a trusted colleague, Dr Abdul Rehman. She returned inside to save another child when a blast occurred, followed by darkness and smoke engulfing the area.
Federal Ministers Syed Mustafa Kamal and Attaullah Tarar were also present at the event.
