PM Terms Newspapers Vital for Informed Society Despite Rapidly Changing Information Landscape

ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 24th Sep, 2026) Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday stated that newspapers hold a crucial position in fostering an informed and conscious society, despite the evolving information landscape.

In his message on National Newspaper Readership Day, observed on September 25, the prime minister praised newspapers and journalism professionals, especially members of the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS), as well as newspaper readers nationwide.

He emphasized that newspapers reflect the political, economic, and social aspects of national life, historically contributing to awareness promotion, public opinion shaping, and providing access to credible information and diverse viewpoints.

The prime minister highlighted the role of newspapers during the independence movement, serving as a powerful voice for Muslims in the subcontinent and significantly impacting political consciousness, unity, and shared purpose. Following Pakistan's creation, he added, the press continued to strengthen democracy, enhance transparency, and keep citizens informed about domestic and international affairs.

Noting the transformation in news access and consumption due to digital and social media, Sharif stressed that newspapers' relevance remains unreduced. He underscored the importance of credible journalism, professional standards, and responsible reporting in an era of rapidly spreading fake news, misinformation, and misleading information.

He encouraged citizens, especially the younger generation, to cultivate the habit of reading newspapers, which not only keeps them updated on current events but also provides context, broadens knowledge, deepens understanding of contemporary affairs, and promotes civic responsibilities.

The prime minister commended editors, journalists, photographers, press workers, and all involved in the newspaper industry for their contributions to national life and their consistent dedication, hard work, and commitment to responsible journalism.
