The NA-168 seat became vacant following the demise of former senior PML-N politician and National Assembly member Malik Muhammad Iqbal Channar. In recognition of his political services, the party nominated his son, Malik Munir Iqbal Channar, who successfully retained his father's seat by defeating independent candidate Wali Dad Cheema, son of former Federal Minister Tariq Bashir Cheema.
