Pakistan’s political and security situation has entered a period of severe tension ahead of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)'s potential march on September 27.
Arrests and Detentions
Speaking to journalists, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan claimed that approximately 1,500 party workers, several members of the National Assembly, provincial legislators, and a senator had been detained in different parts of the country. He accused the authorities of political revenge, specifically targeting Imran Khan's family, with the arrests of his sisters—Aleema Khan, Dr Uzma Khan, and Noreen Niazi—and four other family members.
Important National Assembly members like Adil Buzanjo, Mian Ahsan Jamal, Sanaullah Masti Khel, Senator Saifullah Niazi, and other leaders have also been taken into custody under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO).
Governor's Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Barrister Gohar stated that effective governor’s rule has been imposed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa without a formal notification. He expressed concern, saying, “The members in the province are ours, but someone else is exercising the authority.” He considered this situation dangerous for democracy and noted that the entire province was under control.
Federal Government Response
Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar accused the PTI of pursuing TikTok and social media politics while addressing workers in Peshawar. He claimed that instead of focusing on their own province's deteriorating condition, the PTI government wanted to march on Islamabad.
Former PTI leader Sher Afzal Marwat criticized the party for taking a step without preparation, stating that workers themselves were unaware of the march's purpose. He suggested that the government’s ego and arrogance had led them into a dead end, and proposed that Barrister Gohar could save face by communicating directly with the Prime Minister.
