Punjab Establishes First Dedicated Orchards for Trees Relocated During Development Projects
Punjab Horticulture Authority (PHA) has made history by establishing the province’s first dedicated orchards for trees relocated during development projects. This initiative follows the introduction of the Public Parks, Greenbelts, and Green Areas Protection & Regulated Emergency Transplantation Regulations, 2026, which prioritize the protection and management of green spaces.
In the first phase, orchards have been set up at Bagh-e-Jinnah, Kaleem Shaheed Park, and Dhobi Ghat Park in Faisalabad. A total of 352 trees out of 795 identified for transplantation have been relocated successfully.
PHA Director General Ahmad Usman Javaid emphasized the government's commitment to preserving Punjab's green cover and ensuring that development projects include effective conservation measures. He also announced the completion of the annual monsoon plantation drive, focusing on indigenous, shade-giving tree species.
The regulations require considering transplantation before felling a tree and mandate replacement planting when removal is necessary. The number of saplings to be planted depends on the original tree's impact, with a minimum of 20 saplings per tree and up to 50 if the transplanted tree dies.
This framework ensures uniform standards for tree transplantation, protection during construction, and post-transplant care across all 21 district horticulture agencies under the PHA.
