Punjab Police To Restructure Internal Accountability Branch To Curb Corruption

LAHORE, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 5th Sep, 2026) Punjab Police have decided to restructure its Internal Accountability Branch (IAB) to strengthen transparency, accountability and action against corruption in line with the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.

A meeting chaired by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab reviewed measures to give the IAB a more effective and central role in addressing departmental corruption, misconduct and other irregularities.

Under the proposed mechanism:

  • The DIG (IAB) will personally review complaints against sub-inspectors and officers of higher ranks on a daily basis.
  • Regional SPs will personally conduct inquiries into allegations of corruption, corrupt practices and other irregularities involving the officers concerned, not transferred to respective districts or regions.

The meeting also decided:

  • To reopen complaints previously disposed of on the grounds of “Not Willing to Pursue” and initiate formal inquiries where necessary.
  • Complaints relating to police investigations will be marked at the SP level for action, while departmental proceedings resulting from IAB inquiries will be closely monitored.

IG Punjab directed:

  • The restoration of the post of AIG Inquiries.
  • Filling of vacant posts of Regional SPs and DSPs on a priority basis.
  • Increased funding and budgetary support for the IAB.

The branch will be given greater financial and administrative autonomy to enable its officers to perform their responsibilities independently of field formations.

The meeting reaffirmed Punjab Police’s commitment to enforcing a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and strengthening internal accountability mechanisms to improve transparency and public confidence in the force.
