Israel v Republic of Ireland: Republic to Wear Black Armbands for Israel Game
BBC Sport reports that the Republic of Ireland plans to wear black armbands during their upcoming Nations League match against Israel on Sunday, in Debrecen, Hungary. This gesture is intended as a "recognition of all lives lost in the [Gaza] conflict".
FAI chief executive David Courell confirmed that while one player has withdrawn from the squad in protest, a vote among the remaining players resulted in a "significant majority" in favor of playing.
Additionally, the team intends to make further gestures during both this match and the return fixture against Israel next Sunday in Serbia.
This announcement comes amid controversy surrounding the fixtures due to the ongoing Israel-Gaza war. A campaign called "Stop The Game," organized by the pressure group Irish Sport for Palestine, has gained traction, urging Republic of Ireland players to withdraw from the games.
Courell noted that:
- Players have requested to waive their media obligations for the remainder of this window.
- There will be alterations to pre-match ceremonies.
- The players aim to make a significant charitable donation using match fees and proceeds from a game against Austria at Dublin's Aviva Stadium on Thursday.
The initial news conference scheduled before the team's training session was postponed, highlighting the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the fixture. Despite doubts, Courell confirmed after a lengthy meeting that the majority of players voted to play.
