Faisalabad’s aging water supply infrastructure is set for a major overhaul under a proposed Rs.14.2 billion project being developed with the cooperation of Germany’s KfW Development Bank.

According to a spokesperson from the Water & Sanitation Agency (WASA), this project aligns with Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz's vision and involves:

  • Upgraded treatment facilities: Enhancing the capacity and efficiency of Faisalabad’s water supply system, starting with the rehabilitation and upgrade of the Gulfishan Water Treatment Plant.
  • New tube wells: Installation of 10 new tube wells at strategic locations to bolster the existing network and meet growing demand for potable water.
  • Large water storage tanks: Construction of substantial water storage tanks at Samanabad, Bismillah Chowk, and Gulshan Colony to increase storage capacity and facilitate more efficient distribution.
  • Modern monitoring systems: A state-of-the-art system designed to combat water theft and minimize wastage, empowering authorities with better control over the network and improved resource management.

The project aims to benefit millions of people in Faisalabad and surrounding areas by:

  • Boosting water availability and reliability: Ensuring a more consistent supply of clean and safe water directly to citizens.
  • Modernizing infrastructure: Laying the groundwork for sustainable water management practices.
  • Addressing climate resilience: Allocating five percent of the total project cost to “green resilience” initiatives aimed at fortifying the system against environmental and climate-related challenges.

The spokesperson emphasized that this initiative reflects the Punjab government's commitment to providing citizens with accessible, clean water while simultaneously modernizing the city’s water supply infrastructure. The project is slated for approval by the Secretary Housing during the Punjab Development Working Party (PDWP).
