SAU, FAO Discuss Stronger Cooperation on Climate-Resilient Agriculture and Internship Opportunities
Hyderabad, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 25th Aug, 2026) Strengthening the role of young agricultural graduates in tackling climate change, supporting farmers, and ensuring food security is crucial for the future of Sindh, experts observed during a meeting between the Sindh Agriculture University (SAU), Tandojam, and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations.
A delegation from FAO Pakistan, led by Officer-in-Charge James Robert Okoth, met with Vice Chancellor SAU, Engr. Prof Dr Altaf Ali Siyal, to discuss ways to strengthen institutional cooperation, focusing on education, research, student internships, and capacity-building.
SAU spokesperson stated that the FAO delegation comprised AFAOR Administration Maria Usman, Project Manager RAFAA Pedro Grazon, and Provincial Coordinator-GCF Project Dr Ashfaque Ahmed Nahiyoon.
Dr. Altaf Siyal expressed appreciation for FAO Pakistan's continuous support to the agriculture sector, highlighting that Sindh is among the regions facing significant challenges due to changing climatic conditions. He emphasized the need for agricultural experts and institutions to provide practical solutions to farmers.
"Climate change is already impacting agriculture, water availability, and farmers' livelihoods. Agricultural experts must collaborate closely with farmers and relevant institutions to develop practical solutions," he said.
The vice chancellor stressed the importance of integrating agricultural education and research with field experience so that graduates can effectively address emerging challenges related to climate change, food security, modern agricultural technologies, and sustainable farming practices. He also noted that stronger institutional partnerships between SAU and FAO could offer students and faculty enhanced opportunities for research, internships, professional development, and capacity-building.
FAO Pakistan Officer-in-Charge James Okoth recalled the organization’s successful collaborations with Sindh Agriculture University in the past and expressed interest in expanding joint initiatives. He emphasized increasing SAU student and agricultural expert involvement in initiatives to assist Sindh’s farming communities in adapting to climate-related challenges. FAO aims to work with local communities and institutions, particularly in disadvantaged areas of Sindh, to promote agricultural development and sustainable, beneficial farming practices.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from both institutions to expand cooperation, strengthen institutional ties, and create practical opportunities for students and faculty, ultimately supporting farmers and contributing to sustainable agricultural development in Sindh.
