Gatherings of five or more people, processions, rallies, public meetings and sit-ins will be banned at public places, highways and open spaces across the province, according to a notification issued by the Punjab Home Department.
This restriction will remain in place from today until October 15.
The ban includes:
- Carrying or displaying all types of weapons at public places.
- Inciting or encouraging people to participate in unlawful gatherings.
However, the following are exempt:
- Wedding ceremonies.
- Funeral prayers and burials.
- Mosques and other places of worship.
- Courts, government institutions, and events held with official permission.
- Law enforcement agencies, intelligence agencies, or security personnel on duty.
The Home Department stated that this measure was taken based on information from law enforcement and intelligence agencies regarding imminent threats. Intelligence reports suggest that terrorist organizations are planning to target public gatherings.
Section 144 is intended to protect the lives and property of the public, as public gatherings could become potential easy targets for terrorist attacks.
