Sharjah Ruler Issues Law Regulating Correctional Institution

SHARJAH (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News / WAM - 24th Aug, 2026) His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has issued a law regulating the correctional institution in the Emirate of Sharjah.

Key Provisions:

  1. Establish General Policy: Ensure security, reform, and rehabilitation within the correctional institution.
  2. Principles and Rules: Base governance on social defense principles to protect society through sentence enforcement.
  3. Safe Environment: Safeguard inmates' dignity and protect their rights.
  4. Rehabilitation Focus: Socially, psychologically, and culturally rehabilitate convicted persons serving custodial sentences.

This law applies to:

  • The Correctional Institution in Sharjah.
  • Any other institutions or centers achieving similar objectives within the Emirate.
  • Places designated for pre-trial detention outside the Institution’s administrative jurisdiction.

Institution Establishment:

A local correction and rehabilitation institution, named the "Correctional Institution," will be established under this law. It will be administratively and financially affiliated with the Sharjah Police. The headquarters will be in Sharjah City, with potential branches established in other cities and areas of the Emirate by decision of the Commander-in-Chief, approved by the Executive Council.

Institutional Structure:

The Institution shall comprise:

  • A Juvenile Centre for males and females sentenced to imprisonment or placement.

Legal Framework:

The law encompasses all aspects of the Correctional Institution's organization, including:

  • Construction, supervision, and administration regulations.
  • Database management.
  • Inspection procedures.
  • Visitation arrangements.
  • Admission, rights, and healthcare for inmates.
  • Social care, education, and awareness programs.
  • Violations, disciplinary sanctions, and release procedures.
  • Age categories and benefits granted to inmates.
