Pakistan: PPPP Leader Sharmila Farooqi Calls for Funds for Sukkur-Hyderabad M-6 Motorway Project

Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) leader Sharmila Farooqi on Tuesday called for adequate Federal funding for the Sukkur-Hyderabad M-6 Motorway project, highlighting the strategic importance of the missing link between Karachi and Peshawar.
Speaking in the National Assembly on a point of order, Farooqi noted that the PPPP had been advocating for funding the project for several months. She emphasized the need to complete the M-6, which has faced delays for years.
The leader brought up previous discussions on the issue, including a meeting on August 22 chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar. She expressed concern over what she perceived as an unequal allocation of federal funds between Sindh and Punjab.
Farooqi pointed out a discrepancy: a motorway project between Lahore and Bahawalnagar, estimated at Rs407 billion, received approval, while the first phase of a smaller project, costing Rs49 billion, was allocated Rs30 billion from federal funds.
She argued that the M-6 project, requiring approximately Rs40 billion, has not received the necessary funding, primarily due to the government's alleged lack of fiscal space. Farooqi termed this situation unfair to the people of Sindh, emphasizing the M-6's significance as an inter-provincial connector between Karachi and Peshawar.
She strongly protested the funding disparity and requested that the matter be referred to the relevant Standing Committee on Communications for further discussion. Farooqi urged the government to reconsider and allocate the required funds for the Sukkur-Hyderabad section, enabling the M-6 project's completion.
