LONDON (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News / WAM - 24th September, 2026) – The international maritime community celebrated World Maritime Day with a focus on the direct impacts of geopolitical tensions and conflict on shipping. The IMO Headquarters in London was illuminated in blue to symbolise the global commitment to turning policy into practice.

Merchant ships have been targeted in various conflict zones, from the Strait of Hormuz to the Black Sea and Sea of Azov, resulting in significant losses of innocent seafarers and disruptions to global trade and critical supply chains.

In response, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) highlighted the significance of adhering to and implementing international regulations that ensure safe, secure, efficient, and environmentally responsible shipping while safeguarding those who work at sea.

IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez stated in his official message:

"This year's World Maritime Day theme, ‘From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence’, acknowledges the need for global regulations to be implemented to achieve safer, more resilient, and cleaner shipping."

"Seafarers come first. Always," he emphasized.

With approximately 80% of international trade transported by sea, maritime shipping is vital for global prosperity. For nearly eight decades, nations have collaborated to develop conventions and codes enhancing the efficiency, fairness, sustainability, and safety of global seafaring.

Dominguez called for collective action:

"Let us work together to ensure maritime excellence – and safer, more resilient seas for all."

The World Maritime Day theme will be observed throughout 2026 and 2027, allowing member states and partners to focus on translating global policy decisions into practical outcomes. This includes:

  • Implementing IMO regulations through national legislation
  • Strengthening enforcement mechanisms
  • Enhancing training programs
