Sindh Assembly Passes Bill Allowing Outgoing Representatives to Serve as Administrators

The special committee’s report on the Local Government Amendment Bill 2026 was presented in the assembly, prompting opposition members to protest and tear up copies of the bill.

KARACHI, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 14th Sep, 2026) The Sindh Assembly passed the Local Government Amendment Bill 2026, under which the mayor will assume the powers of administrator when the council’s term expires. Sindh Home Minister Zia Lanjar presented the bill in the house.

During the proceedings, opposition members protested and gathered in front of the speaker’s dais. They tore up copies of the Local Government Amendment Bill.

The special committee’s report on the Local Government Amendment Bill 2026 was presented in the house, after which the bill was passed. According to the bill, outgoing representatives will serve as administrators until the newly elected mayor assumes office.

The deputy mayor will be appointed convener of the council and will preside over its meetings. Under the bill, Union Council chairmen will identify illegal constructions and inform the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA).

A conciliation forum has also been included in the bill, with its formation made mandatory within 90 days.
