The Sindh government proposes a $30 million biogas development project to establish five centralized facilities in Hyderabad, Sukkur, Mirpurkhas, Larkana, and Shaheed Benazirabad. The project aims to produce 120,000 cubic metres of biogas, 63,000 cubic metres of biomethane, and 45 tonnes of organic fertilizer daily by processing livestock manure.
According to official documents, the project, named "Bio-Gas Development Project for Sustainable Alternatives Towards Affordable Energy," promotes renewable energy, reduces reliance on fossil fuels, captures methane emissions, and strengthens energy security across the province.
Key Features:
- Emission Reductions: The facilities are expected to avoid approximately 250,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions annually, with cumulative reductions projected at five million tonnes over 20 years.
- Design and Implementation: The project will comprise five centralized anaerobic manure treatment plants with associated infrastructure for collection, storage, and processing.
- Benefits: The initiative converts livestock manure into usable energy and organic fertilizer, creating green employment opportunities and sustainable business models in biofuel production and waste management.
The Sindh Environment, Climate Change and Coastal Development Department (ECC&CDD) leads the project, with district administrations, the Sindh Livestock Department, and the Sindh Energy Department as implementation partners.
