Britain's Dalton Smith defended his WBC light-welterweight world title with a split-decision victory over Alberto Puello in a triumphant homecoming in Sheffield.

The 29-year-old extended his unbeaten professional record in a high-class tactical contest at the Utilita Arena, with both fighters displaying sharp counter-punching skills.

The outcome was in balance as the judges' scorecards were revealed, with either fighter or a draw seemingly within reach. However, Smith was awarded the win, with two judges scoring 115-113 in his favour and one scoring 116-112 for Puello.

It was Smith's first defence of his title since his stunning fifth-round knockout of Subriel Matias in Brooklyn in January.

The Sheffield fighter passed another stern test against two-time world champion Puello, moving his record to 20 wins.

With his mandatory challenger vanquished, Smith keeps alive his dream of headlining a show at Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough Stadium and will target top names in the division, including the undefeated American Shakur Stevenson.

In the ring:

Sheffield, known for its boxing heritage, which has produced world champions like Prince Naseem Hamed, Johnny Nelson, and Kell Brook, welcomed their latest champion with a hero's reception. Dressed in the blue and white of his beloved Sheffield Wednesday, Smith made his entrance to AC/DC's "Thunderstruck."

The fight started cautiously, with neither fighter willing to overcommit, showcasing sharp defensive skills. Smith, known for his willingness to stand and trade, faced a different challenge from Puello, a slick southpaw who relied on movement and counter-punching.

Smith controlled the early rounds, landing a right hand in the fourth, while Puello found his range with lefts before Smith connected again at the bell.

Puello came alive in the sixth, landing a series of straight lefts, and briefly had the home crowd on their feet, thinking he'd scored a knockdown.

The atmosphere was electric, resembling a football match with a drummer and trumpeter joining the fans in singing Sheffield Wednesday chants.

Smith responded with a powerful double jab and right hook in the ninth, while Puello answered with a powerful uppercut and hook to the body.

As the fight reached its climax, both fighters had everything to play for. Smith's higher work rate appeared to give him the edge in the final rounds, and he celebrated with his father at the final bell.

Looking ahead:

With his breakthrough year establishing him among the division's elite, Smith's next move will be closely watched. Could he headline a show at Hillsborough? The future looks bright for the Sheffield fighter.
