Peoples Party Vice President Senator Sherry Rehman on Sunday stated that negotiations with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) ended in failure due to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government's refusal to sign an agreed draft concerning cooperation with the federal government in counter-terrorism efforts.
According to a press statement, the senator explained that while all sides had initially concurred on four drafts during negotiations, discussions extended until late into the night owing to changes proposed by PTI. She emphasized the need for direct participation from both the KP government and senior federal leadership of PTI in the talks, highlighting their absence at the negotiations.
She further noted that after 8:30 p.m., the Peshawar government began introducing new conditions, describing it as a missed opportunity in her 25 years of parliamentary experience. She viewed these negotiations as crucial for building political trust and ending political polarization in the country.
Senator Sherry Rehman emphasized the importance of time and trust in negotiations globally, expressing regret over the lost chance to foster a better working relationship between the KP government and federal authorities. She appreciated the patience shown throughout the process, thanking Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi for their role in providing ample opportunity for talks.
Despite continuous changes, she stated, all government negotiating teams remained focused. “We did not end the negotiations until before Sunday morning,” she said, adding that they kept the doors open until the other side ceased participation.
