Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina has ended her marriage with French former tennis player Gaël Monfils, citing the emotional impact of the war in her country.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Svitolina wrote about the effect the conflict has had on her, saying "I need to find my way back to myself" and that she felt she could not do so within her marriage. She praised her husband for his understanding and respect.
"Some battles happen deep inside you, and no amount of love from someone else can win them for you," she said.
Svitolina and Monfils married in 2021 and have a four-year-old daughter together. She said her daughter "will always come first", adding "our marriage is ending, but our family is not".
