The Grand Tour's New Presenters: 'I Hope We Prove the Critics Wrong'

A Challenging Task
For over two decades, these three men defined Top Gear and The Grand Tour as much by their personalities as by the vehicles they showcased. With such a legacy, any successor faced an immense challenge.
The New Lineup
- James Engelsman and Thomas Holland, known for their YouTube channel Throttle House, bring their established chemistry and car knowledge.
- Francis Bourgeois, a social media star who gained fame on railway platforms, rounds out the trio.
Adapting to Change
The presenters acknowledge the skepticism from fans who grew up with Clarkson, Hammond, and May. Holland understands these feelings, having experienced them himself.
“They're completely justified to feel that, because they did the same thing that we did - which is grow up watching Clarkson, Hammond and May.”
Bourgeois shares his experience:
“We've had all the same reactions... like, 'Who would do that? What an idiot.' We've been through it all... Now we've filmed it, I'm just excited to show the world. We've done our absolute best and the critics will be critics.”
Building Chemistry
Finding a balance was crucial. Engelsman and Holland had previously worked together on Throttle House, while Bourgeois' social media fame brought him into the fold.
Holland recalls their initial chemistry test:
“As soon as Francis showed up, we were like: 'That guy.'”
Bourgeois remembers the first meeting, where they mainly discussed cars and a leather sofa in a hotel near Basingstoke.
A Smooth Transition
While building chemistry was essential, the transition to filming was relatively smooth. Holland notes that there was no need for conscious effort; the trio's dynamics simply clicked naturally.
Engelsman describes their selection process as less about an immediate offer and more about gradually learning they'd been chosen through various stages.
