Khalid Sheikh Mohammed: Trial Date Set for Alleged 9/11 Mastermind
BBC News reports that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, alleged mastermind of the 2001 9/11 attacks, will stand trial in June 2028 (a delay from a requested 2027 date).
Mohammed had previously reached a plea deal where he would admit guilt in exchange for avoiding a death-penalty trial. However, this agreement was rejected by a federal appeals court last summer. He has been held at Guantanamo Bay since September 2006.
Mohammed is accused of planning the attacks from start to finish. The hijackers flew planes into the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Virginia, resulting in nearly 3,000 deaths.
The trial will involve Mohammed and three co-accused: Walid bin Attash, Ali Abdul Aziz Ali, and Mustafa al-Hawsawi. The start date allows for additional time to address court matters, such as resolving evidence disputes.
Next month marks 25 years since the devastating attacks.
