US Supreme Court Allows Execution of Christa Pike to Proceed

BBC News reports that the US Supreme Court has lifted a stay of execution for Tennessee inmate Christa Pike, clearing the way for her lethal injection scheduled for an earlier date this week. The court overruled a last-minute reprieve granted by the Sixth Circuit Appeals court, which had halted the execution.

Pike, 50, was convicted and sentenced to death in 1996 for the murder of Colleen Slemmer. If carried out, her execution would make her the first woman to be executed in Tennessee in over two centuries. The timing of the execution is yet to be confirmed.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh granted the application to vacate the stay without providing an explanation.
