We Sign Pacts To Protect Other Countries But Cannot Save Our Citizens: Hamid Mir
Pakistani citizens remained hostage in the hands of Somali pirates for five months, but the government did nothing beyond issuing appeals, prompting a senior journalist to ask how the state can protect others abroad if it cannot protect its own citizens.
ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 30th Sep, 2026) Senior journalist and analyst Hamid Mir said that Pakistan is signing agreements to provide protection to other countries, but regrettably, several Pakistani sailors remained hostage in Somalia at the hands of pirates for five months, while the Pakistani government did nothing to protect its citizens beyond issuing appeals.
In a post on X, he questioned why the operation was not conducted by Pakistan’s security forces. "If the state of Pakistan cannot protect its citizens, how can it go to other countries and provide protection to others?" he asked.
It may be recalled that during an operation by Somalia’s maritime police against pirates the previous day, five people—including three Pakistanis, one Indian and one Myanmar national—were killed when the oil tanker “Honor 25” came under fire, while four Pakistani citizens were injured. Somali authorities said five crew members were killed in pirate fire. The Palau-flagged oil tanker “Honor 25” had been hijacked in April. In a statement, Somalia’s maritime police said personnel from the Maritime Police Force of Somalia’s semi-autonomous Puntland region conducted an operation on MT Honor 25 and rescued 17 crew members.
According to the police statement, naval and ground forces carried out the operation in Dharin Bar, in the Bandar Baila district. The tanker’s crew included 10 Pakistanis.
