Jodrell Bank, home to the iconic Lovell Telescope, is facing closure due to funding cuts. The site, established in 1945, holds historical significance in radio astronomy and popular culture, having been featured in works like The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Doctor Who.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has vowed to preserve this national treasure, stating:
"Every one of my generation went on a school trip to Jodrell Bank, and there is no way that we can see its demise, and it won’t happen under my government."
UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) announced in July that the site would not be prioritized for funding after March 2028. However, Burnham criticized their decision, highlighting Jodrell Bank’s heritage value alongside its research significance.
Congleton MP Sarah Russell echoed these concerns, calling for collaboration to address the issue. Burnham responded by promising a meeting with relevant parties to explore solutions and commit to finding a way to save the observatory.
More than 150 public figures have signed a letter urging the government to reverse UKRI’s decision and secure immediate funding for Jodrell Bank’s future.
