Elopement: When a Wedding Fell Apart, 11 Strangers Helped Create Something Unforgettable
BBC News NI
When her fiancé suffered a medical emergency, causing their planned elopement to crumble, Bridget Devaney could have chosen to move on. Instead, she turned to the internet with a proposal that seemed both hopeful and audacious—inviting 11 strangers from around the world to Northern Ireland for a celebration that never happened.
This is their story.
Once associated with clandestine romances and quick ceremonies, elopements have transformed into destination weddings with breathtaking backdrops. Many couples are now opting for intimate celebrations, often choosing scenic locations like the rugged Irish coastline.

After her separation, Bridget, based between the US and Killarney, County Kerry, felt devastated. It wasn't until a photographer reached out about her postponed wedding plans that she realized she needed to make a choice. Inspired by a friend, she posted about a female-only trip on her anonymous social media profile, receiving hundreds of inquiries.
Janae Pettit, a design consultant from Utah, saw the post on April Fool's Day but quickly realized it was no joke. "All the stranger danger we had learned growing up was just out the window."
Over the following months, Bridget carefully selected 11 women from the US, Canada, and Wales, each with their own motivations for joining. Janae, approaching her 40th birthday, wanted to do something for herself and support the "non-bride."
"I was sad because I was like, nobody cares about me. I'm unimportant. I'm finally entering middle age and I should do something for me," she shared.

The trip became more than just a chance to travel; it fostered deep connections and lasting friendships. The group, now considering a reunion, calls themselves lifelong friends.
This story is a testament to the power of community and the unexpected connections we can make when we dare to reach out.
