Why Bookshops are Booming in the TikTok Age

BBC News

In summary: While reading was once considered a pastime for the elderly, a recent surge in book buying is being driven by younger audiences, with TikTok playing a significant role. This has led to a rise in independent book shops across the UK and Ireland, reaching its highest level since 2012.

The Bookshop Boom

According to the Booksellers Association, there were 1,086 independent bookshops in the UK and Ireland in 2025, up from a low of 867 in 2016. This trend is evident in the stories of three booksellers who have recently embarked on this journey:

  • Sally Flint opened The Book Stop in Brigg, North Lincolnshire, six weeks ago. She works up to 14 hours a day but enjoys "lots of fun" along the way.
  • Georgina Wilson launched Clutterbooks in Hornsea, East Yorkshire, in November 2025 after testing the market with a book club and stall. She found the retail side challenging but rewarding.
  • Shannon Hanson, who started a local book club in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, took the plunge and opened Chapter & Page Books in August. She juggles her day job as a nurse with running the shop, assisted by volunteers.

The Role of TikTok

While these booksellers are enjoying success, others face challenges. Despite this, TikTok has emerged as a powerful force in the book industry. A recent report from Public First and EY revealed that TikTok generated £175 million in consumer spending on books in 2025. The platform even had a designated BookTok hub at the Frankfurt Book Fair, where content creators could make videos.

Navigating the Challenges

However, not all bookshops are thriving. Some, like one in Bristol and another in Clitheroe, have struggled to stay afloat due to high rents or other financial difficulties.

In conclusion, while the bookshop boom is fueled by a younger audience's passion for reading, it's clear that TikTok has played a significant role in this resurgence, presenting both opportunities and challenges for independent booksellers.
