Up to 20 million households in England will get a £100 payment directly into their bank accounts this winter, the government has announced. Here's what you need to know:
How much is it?
For many, the £100 is a significant amount, but consider that a typical yearly energy bill is forecast to jump by £276 in January, leaving many still worse off.
Will I get the payment?
- Eligible households: Those in council tax bands A to D in England.
- Check eligibility: Use the council tax band search function by entering your postcode.
Beyond England?
- Scotland, Wales, and NI: While announced for England, funding is available for Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Chancellor John Healey urged these governments to adopt the measure.
- Council Tax Responsibility: However, due to council tax being a devolved matter, Healey lacks power to extend the payment to the rest of the UK.
How do I get the money?
- Timing: The payment will appear in your bank account used for council tax from early January.
- Students and non-payers: Students living in halls won't receive the payment. Other non-payers will receive it if their property is in bands A to D.
What can I do with the money?
The government emphasizes that the money is intended for energy bills, but it's not targeted, so individuals can choose other uses.
How is the government funding this?
The money comes from a rise in bank corporation tax, increasing from 3% to 6% for 15 months from 1 January 2027 to 31 March 2028.
