This virus, buried for thousands of years beneath Antarctica’s icy cliffs, is reportedly far more dangerous and deadly than coronavirus, medical experts say.

MOSCOW, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 6th Oct, 2026) Four people who came into contact with a woman who died from pneumonia of an unknown nature in Russia’s Irkutsk Region have tested positive for coronavirus and rhinovirus.

According to Russia’s consumer health and safety watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, laboratory tests were conducted on people who had been in contact with the woman. The results showed that two people had COVID-19, while two others were diagnosed with rhinovirus infection.

The Russian watchdog clarified that no other infectious disease pathogens had been detected among the remaining people under observation.

Authorities had earlier described the overall health situation in Irkutsk Region as stable, while medical monitoring of those who came into contact with the woman remains ongoing.

Meanwhile, medical scientists are describing new virus variants as more dangerous and deadly than coronavirus. A report in an American journal states experts said these viruses had existed for thousands of years beneath Antarctica’s icy cliffs. They claimed that the series of viruses discovered also included a dangerous plague virus that attacks the human respiratory system, particularly the lungs, and renders them dysfunctional.

Scientists warned that the virus should be destroyed as soon as possible. They said emergency measures must be taken in Antarctic areas where ice is melting to prevent the virus from spreading, describing such steps as essential for the survival of humanity.

According to experts, the virus spreads rapidly from person to person through breathing, airborne transmission, coughing, sneezing or saliva. They believe that if it spreads, the virus could prove far more dangerous than COVID-19. Scientists said experiments were underway on an extremely powerful antibiotic for the virus.
