World Leaders Converge on NY for 81st UNGA to Tackle Conflicts & AI Governance; Pakistan to Push for Dispute Resolutions
UNITED NATIONS, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 21st Sep, 2026) With security tightened around the UN headquarters in New York, the 81st UN General Assembly opens its high-level debate today, tackling critical issues like AI regulation, climate change, inequality, and ongoing crises in Ukraine, Sudan, and the Middle East.
These challenges arrive at a crucial moment for the UN, as its efforts to prevent wars and ease civilian suffering are hindered by funding cuts that have weakened its capacity. This session will culminate in the appointment of a new Secretary-General, against the backdrop of Pakistan's expanding global influence.
Top Bangladeshi diplomat Khalilur Rahman presides over this session, themed "Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All."
Over 130 heads of state and government, including Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, will participate in the annual debate. PM Shehbaz is scheduled to address the Assembly on September 25th.
Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan's Ambassador, emphasizes the prime minister's elevated global standing: "He is coming to the UNGA in the backdrop of unprecedented prominence and profile of Pakistan at the global stage." This includes Pakistan's successful defense against Indian aggression, its advocacy for peaceful dispute settlements, its role in high-stakes mediation between Iran and the US, and the historic Pak-Turkish-Saudi Makkah Pact.
In his address, PM Shehbaz will:
- Present Pakistan’s perspective on regional and international security.
- Highlight the importance of dialogue, diplomacy, restraint, and peaceful dispute resolution.
- Outline Pakistan's diplomatic efforts to prevent escalation, promote dialogue, and contribute to peace in the region.
- Discuss priorities on global issues such as sustainable development, climate change, counter-terrorism, Islamophobia, economic challenges, UN reform, and more.
