As he reached for his serve in the fifth set, Alexander Zverev’s mind flashed back to six years earlier, when he squandered a two-set lead to lose to Dominic Thiem in a heart-breaking defeat. This time, however, he was determined to turn his tears into triumph.
With his back against the wall against American Ben Shelton, Zverev focused on the present moment, blocking out the noise and the crowd’s anticipation. His strategy worked, securing a 6-3 7-6 (7-2) 5-7 6-2 victory.
"In that moment I was in the zone," Zverev said, surprised by his own lack of awareness of the crowd’s reaction. "I didn’t hear noise at all."
A Transformational Year and a Test of Mentality
Zverev’s victory marks the end of a remarkable year, his best on the Tour. He reached the semi-finals at the Australian Open and the final at Wimbledon, alongside French Open and US Open titles.
His success can be attributed to a combination of factors:

Injuries to Sinner and Alcaraz: Opportunities arose due to the injuries of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, the past two major winners.

Mental and Physical Dedication: A strengthened mentality and rigorous fitness routine have been key.
"There is no-one as fit as Zverev," said former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli on BBC Radio 5 Live.
Acknowledging Influences
Zverev dedicated his win to his parents, especially his mother, who supported him through his type 1 diabetes diagnosis as a child.
"My mother is the most important and strongest person I know," he said.
His father, Alexander senior, was also present on the sidelines, a testament to their close bond and the family’s influence on his success.
