NATHIAGALI, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 18th Sep, 2026) Founder of the League, Professor Dr. Muhammad Ishaq, stated that approximately 35 percent of Pakistan's population is affected by hypertension, a silent condition that can lead to heart disease, stroke, kidney damage, and impaired vision.
Speaking at a press conference on the inaugural day of the 29th three-day annual conference of the Pakistan Hypertension League, he emphasized the importance of early detection and regular blood pressure checks due to hypertension's lack of symptoms.
He suggested several measures to reduce the risk of hypertension, including:
- Maintaining a healthy weight
- Limiting salt intake
- Avoiding tobacco
- Engaging in regular physical exercise daily
Dr. Ishaq also noted that hypertension is impacting younger individuals and is more prevalent in urban areas, with women representing a higher proportion of patients. He further highlighted the high prevalence of the disease in South Asian countries.
Professor Dr. Qazi Abdul Saboor, chairing the event, stressed the Pakistan Hypertension League's commitment to raising awareness about hypertension. He encouraged individuals experiencing shortness of breath or headaches to get their blood pressure checked and called for families of patients to take necessary precautions.
He emphasized the need for a wider awareness campaign, particularly in rural areas, where around 70 percent of Pakistanis reside. Professor Saboor also urged media outlets to play a role in educating the public about hypertension's prevention, early detection, and control.
Over 250 doctors from across the country and international delegates participated in the conference, dedicated to raising awareness about the growing prevalence of hypertension.
