UK Economy Surprises with Growth in July, Driven by AI Boom

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed a 0.4% expansion in the UK economy during July, contrary to economist predictions of no growth. This positive outcome was largely influenced by a robust performance from the services sector, particularly in computer programming.
According to Emer Moreau’s report, July’s figure follows consecutive months of growth: a 0.3% rise in June and flat growth in May. The ONS director of economic statistics, Liz McKeown, highlights the contribution of AI-related businesses to this success.
"There was evidence that businesses involved with AI and related technologies helped to boost the sector, not just in July but in May and June as well," said McKeown. She also acknowledges the potential impact of warm weather and the FIFA World Cup on industry activity during July.
In a broader context, the ONS states that the economy grew by 0.4% in the three months to July compared with the previous quarter.
Chancellor John Healey expressed optimism about the economy’s "welcome resilience" despite global uncertainties. He noted the UK’s position as the fastest-growing G7 economy in the first half of the year, but also recognized the effects of the Middle East conflict on domestic costs.
Economists like Paul Dales from Capital Economics predict a pending slowdown in growth due to rising energy and borrowing costs. The Bank of England is set to meet next week, with interest rate decisions expected to be watched closely.
