A 15-year-old Alaska resident, Derek Parker, survived three days in the open sea after his boat capsized, ultimately being rescued alive in what has been described as a miraculous survival.
Following the accident, Parker became stranded at sea and faced extremely difficult conditions for several days. Despite Alaska’s cold waters, strong waves and constantly changing weather, he did not give up and continued struggling to survive.
His survival at sea for three days astonished rescue officials. He was eventually located during a rescue operation and moved to safety.
Rescue authorities described Parker’s survival as an extraordinary incident. Officials said the boy had been fishing with his cousin and brother near St. Lawrence Island on September 4 when their boat overturned.
Parker’s brother and cousin drowned in the accident.
Captain Adam White of the Coast Guard vessel that rescued Parker said the boy told them that his brother was still beneath the boat, while his cousin had slipped from the top of the boat and drowned before they arrived.
The Coast Guard spotted Parker at 10:30 a.m. on September 7. Before that, Alaska State Troopers had informed the Coast Guard about the children’s disappearance on the night of September 6. When Parker was found, he was sitting on top of the overturned boat.
Adam White said the discovery was astonishing and that it was extremely cold at the location. When Parker was rescued, he was showing symptoms of hypothermia, and the ship’s crew covered him with blankets.
A family member said Parker climbed onto the boat after his 35-year-old brother and 34-year-old cousin drowned. The boy spent 62 hours at sea without food or water, sitting on top of the boat throughout.
