As Trump and Xi talk, China surges ahead with its AI ambitions

China AI: Data Centres Rise from the Rolling Plains of Inner Mongolia

The expansive grasslands of Inner Mongolia are home to more than just farmers cultivating plump potatoes; they're also becoming a hub for China's burgeoning artificial intelligence (AI) ambitions. Ulanqab, known for its steppes and volcanoes, is transforming into a digital frontier, marked by the construction of numerous data centres.

In the Heart of AI Competition:

As US President Trump and Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping discuss AI safety and related issues, China is racing ahead with its AI plans. The construction site in Ulanqab, an unlikely candidate for such technological advancement, is a testament to this "infrastructure maniac" nation's relentless pursuit of digital dominance.

Powering AI with Data Centres:

The data centres being built here are crucial for China's national security and economic future. By 2030, the Chinese Communist Party aims to integrate AI into 90% of industries and society. These facilities will be instrumental in achieving that goal.

Talent Pool Flourishes:

China isn't just building infrastructure; it's also cultivating a talent pool. Tensions with the US and restrictions on immigration have made many young engineers and researchers see China as an attractive alternative to the American dream. Jack Zhang, recruited by a high-level program after studying at Yale and Cambridge, is one such example.

"I wanted to apply AI in human health and medicine, which requires more resources and government support," he explains. "That's often easier to access in China."

AI Race Continues:

China's expanding AI capabilities are a key reason the US is reluctant to pause its own development, despite concerns from within the industry about the pace of advancement. President Trump emphasized this when he stated, "Whoever wins AI, wins."
